Manufactured from quality zinc-plated steel, a welding Earth Clamp is designed with a strong spring, copper-plated jaw and copper braid to provide reliable grounding during an MMA weld.
A decent ground connection is required to provide a quality weld as all the welding current passes through the earth clamp. If there is no accurate grounding, leakage will occur which could conduct electricity through the human body.
The TRADEweld Earth Clamp provides a large contact area and secure grounding to produce a remarkable weld. The durable earth clamp is easy to install or remove and is resistant to corrosion
If the earth clamp or the area in which it is placed becomes worn or contaminated, it will restrict the power of the electrical arc and result in a poor quality weld. To keep a weld and professional, ensure that the:
- Cable lug fits properly and is securely tightened to the clamp
- Earth clamp is not damaged or worn
- Connection of the clamp to the job is secure
Preparing to use an Earth Clamp:
Set up a safe work area that is cleared of tools and flammable items. Use a steel table that has no oil, rust or paint as it will interfere with the grounding of the workpiece.
To avoid any contamination while welding, remove oil, rust, paint and dirt from the item to be welded by using sandpaper, a wire brush or an angle grinder. Contamination can create resistance and a weld splash.
How to use an Earth Clamp:
- Always wear the correct safety gear such as safety gloves, safety shoes, a welding helmet and a welding jacket when welding.
- Select the correct electrode and amperage range on the welder for the task.
- Place the electrode into the electrode holder, ensuring the holder is in your dominant hand and at a comfortable welding position.
- Place the earth clamp onto the workpiece that is clean from oil, rust and dirt. If you are working from a metal bench, secure the earth clamp directly to the bench that is clean and out of the way.
- Switch on the welding machine.
- Strike the electrode against the surface of the metal to strike an electric arc.
- Keep a consistent arc along the path you wish to weld.
- Switch off the welder once welding is completed.
- Remove the earth clamp from the workpiece or welder.
Proper grounding while welding is important to avoid ruining your weld or experiencing electric shocks while working.
